In the case of an emergency I could easily convert this to run on our VMware hosts. This is enough for us since the Software has no state, its basically just a a fixed reference database.

I keep a backup every time I have to upgrade the VM format due to VirtualBox updates. Now I just run it in VirtualBox on a generic Windows 10 PC on the shop floor, for easy access.

Our supplier (not the original vendor) never bothered to update it, so we are stuck with it.Ī couple years back I P2V'd that machine with an older version of the Oracle VM Converter (they removed support for XP in a while ago). My use case is precisely an old paint mixture application that only runs on XP. Maybe XP will work anyway, but double check it will actually run before you worry about cloning. Officially, Microsoft didn't add 7th gen CPU supportto any of it's OSes prior to Windows 10 build 1511. All of our Optiplex 7050s (which are from 2017, how'd you get a new one?) are running the 7th generation Intel Kaby Lake line of processors.

If you look on the web, you can find USMT with a GUI, other wise, it's a two part, command line interface. Then use USMT, User State Migration Tool, a freebie from Microsoft, to transfer your user from your old PC to the new one. XP you say? It might not run on an Optiplex 7050, you might want to test that. A new machine with a clean load of Microsoft Windows 10, patched to the max. XP you say? It might not run on an Optiplex 7050, you might want to test that. There is a serial port cable connecting from the PC to the machine. The legacy program is on Windows XP and the PC needs a serial port. This is the way to go unless you have very specific hardware depencies. I agree with starting fresh with new PC if its generic end user PC.īut how about some production floor PCs, if we have some legacy machine programs which run on legacy OS only and not on newer OS.Īll we are planning to do is move them to a newer PC hardware, this way we don't have to worry about hardware failure.Ĭan you just run it as a VM? That would make it hardware agnostic.
